Neerattupuram Boat Race

Neerattupuram Boat Race is held on month of September every year during Onam festival. Thiru Onam is an important day in Malayalam calendar.Neerattupuram Boat Race is organized on Pamba river, location of the famous Chakkulathukavu is about 10 km away from Thiruvalla. Neerattupuram is also called Neerettupuram.The boat race is held on Thiruvonam day.Four to Six snake boats and various other boats traditionally participate in this race. The boat race starts after the traditional onasadhya . More than 1000 oarsmen in boats of different sizes and shapes will participate in this event.The successful iruttukuthi will win The Ever Rolling Trophy.The excitement these boat races created and the growing social participation led to similar sporting events being organized at various other locations.

According to the Legend says that long back an Asura king named Mahabeli ruled Kerala. He was disposed by Lord Vamana. The king was allowed to visit Kerala once every year. In Malayalam calendar, Thiruvonum day is celebrated to commemorate his great rule and his annual visit to his kingdom.Thomas said the main teams that took part in the Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Alappuzha are expected to participate in the Neerattupuram Pampa boat race.The celebrations include a cultural fest, arts and sports competitions for schoolchildren, and a Vanchippattu contest. K C Joseph, Cultural Affairs Minister; MPs P J Kurien, Kodikkunnil Suresh and Anto Antony, MLAs Mathew T Thomas and Thomas Chandy will speak at the inaugural of the snake-boat regatta.
