This has reference to the news item under the caption “Palakkad-Pollachi gauge conversion loses steam” published in the national daily ‘The Hindu’ dated 10th August, 2014. It is a wake up call to all the people from Palakkad and its surrounding region to act. Hitherto fund constraint was made as a villain for delay in completion of the gauge conversion work in the Palakkad – Pollachi segment and acquisition of land and fund constraint as stumbling block for completion of gauge conversion work in Pollachi-Podhanur segment. Now sufficient fund allocation has been earmarked in the current budget for completion of the work and land acquisition has also been completed amicably, but surprising to note the cynicism about meeting the deadline of 31.12.2014. While presenting the Budget, the Union Railway Minister has made a point blank assertion that don’t crib over new projects not being announced and that the States and the MPs should follow up completion of numerous pending ones. Therefore, any further delay in completion of on going work will deprive the regions for consideration of fresh initiatives/projects by the Railway Ministry in the near future. Mere raising the issue in the house by the elected representatives is not sufficient. The elected representatives should take more proactive massive action in an apolitical manner by involving all sections among the society from the region. While the undue hardship due to delay in completion of the rail connectivity is on daily commuters, tourists, people on pilgrimage, the major beneficiary due to this inordinate delay in gauge conversion is the powerful bus operators lobby. Unfortunate that the politicians in Kerala who agitate on Palestine and Israel issues and behaves like champions of global issues are not bothered and ready to consider this development issue of their region confronting the common as an issue.
