Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of twelve Wildlife Sanctuaries among the protected areas of Kerala. It was established in the month of august in year of 1984 .It is location About 60 km from Munnar,and 18 km from of Marayoor,Idukki District in state of Kerala .It is spread over an areas of about 90.44 square kilometers and located at the elevation of about 2,372 meters from the sea level.The sanctuary remains open throughout the year respectively.But the Superior time to visit at Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in between the month of October-November.The Chinnar is an ideal spot for bird watching.All the Eco-tourism activities are organized jointly by the Forest Department and the Eco-development Committees (EDCs) of the local tribal communities.

The most attraction of tourist towards itself by Giant Grizzled squirrel, Elephants, Spotted Deer.The Chinnar and Pamber river are the major continual water resources in the sanctuary.Tourists can enjoy the natural walk along the Chinnar and Pamber river banks.

The rivers are home to over 42 species of fishes.The Chinnar is the second habitat for the endangered Giant Grizzled Squirrel of India.The Average annual rainfall is about 100mm.The major portion of the area is covered with grass lands.There are 34 species of mammals, 245 species of birds, 36 species of reptiles,22 species of amphibians and 42 species of fishes are found within this Sanctuary. The main attractions of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary are Elephants, Gaurs, Panthers, Spotted Deer, Sambhars, Grizzled Giant Squirrels, Hanuman Langurs, Peacocks, Star Tortoises and Travancore evening browns.

The sanctuary is home to over 965 species of flora.The place is also an idealistic for boating as well as trekking and has variety of trees. The spectacular Thoovanam waterfall located deep within the sanctuary adds to its scenic and wildlife beauty. The watchtower in the park offers sensational broad previews of the sanctuary.

By Train: Ernakulam Railway Station the nearest station located about 130 km from Munnar. Pollachi Railway Station is about 60 Km from munnar.

By Bus:The sanctuary is well connected to major places by road.

By Airport: Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport located about 150 km from Munnar.
