Kodungallur Bhagavati Temple

Kodungallur is a town located in Thrissur District of Kerala India about 29 km away from Cochin City. Kodungallur was an integral part of Mahodayapuram, the capital city of the kingdom of Second Cheras. It was an ancient and famous port in historic times who have relation of trade with foreign sates and countries like Romans , Arabs. It is also believed that Thomas the Apostle landed on the land of Kerala nearby Kodungallur only and built seven Churches in Kerala. Cherman Juma Masjid the first Mosque in Kerala was established here in Kodungallur in 629 AD. Kodungallur is a rich historical town with numerous sites of historic Importance . Kodungallur Bhagavati Temple or Kurumba Bhagavati Temple is one of the famous temples in Kerala dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali locally called as Kodungallur Amma . The temple is believed to be built by Chera kings. Temple is located in area of 10 acres surrounded by banyan and Peepal trees . There is a seven feet high idol of bhagawati made of wood, carved from a jackfruit tree. The idol has eight arms that carry weapons and symbols. Legends also says that the temple was once a Buddhist Monastery during Chera Period.

Festivals

  • Bharani Festival – It is one of the most auspicious and famous temple festivals of Kerala. It normally falls between the months of March and April.Chandanapoti Charthal is yet another festival of smearing the image with sandal paste.
  • Thalappoli festival– It occurs in the months of Januaru- February and it commences from the evening of Makara Sankranthi with religious rituals.

Kodungallur is located in the way of NH 17 connecting Cochin to Mumbai and is well connected by KSRTC buses and private transport buses.

By AirCochin International Airport is the nearest airport about 35 Km away. Airport is well connected to other major cities of Kerala and India . Regular flights take off from here from various airlines.

By TrainIrinjalakuda Railway Station is the nearest Railway Station to it about 22 Km away. Aluva Station is the major Station near this town which is halting point for many trains coming to south India. Both Stations lies in Shoranur-Cochin Harbour section.

By Road– Kodungallur has a bus stand both KSRTC and Private buses. Frequent bus services are available to town like Ernakulum, Thrissur, Guruvayur, Chalakudy , Calicut and many more.
