Perumithitta Tharavad is an extremely popular traditional festival celebrated in the state of Kerala.The festival is held in Kottamkuzhy, Kasaragod District of Kerala.In popularity the festival is rated very high as large number of tourists and visitors gather here during the festival. This is a well-recognized form of Theyyam festivals which is held around the time of New Year’s Eve during the month of December and January. Theyyam is not only high on entertainment value but also has great religious significance. Throughout the festival a number of rituals are performed according to the traditions of the state.

These dances are among the oldest forms of art in India. The dance carnival held at Kottamkuzhy is truly a visual treat for all the onlookers who gather here from across the country. There are different forms of Theyyam, each invariably representing superhuman powers that include heroic characters and ancestral spirits. A variety of Theyyams are presented in Kanathoor. Theyyams come in amazing dresses, marked by headdresses of fluctuating size and a majority of red color for the colorful facial make-up. The actors option to a unique language.The costumes of each Theyyam may differ according to the role and myth of the forms.The facial make-up itself would speak volumes about the nature of a particular Theyyam. All the costumes are prepared by the artistes themselves by using locally available materials. During the Theyyams the singer depicts the thought infuriating images through his dance steps and loud voice.

The Theyyams later changed into the Krishnattom and Kathakali.This festival is one of the most interesting attractions in Kerala.The spectators who are thoroughly enjoy Theyyams at Kanathoor and they get acquainted with different art forms of Kerala.
