Kottarakkara

Kottarakkara is a town located in Kollam District of Kerala about 27 Km from Kollam City. Kottarakkara town has a rich historical background and was known as Elayadathu Swarupam in ancient time by the Kings of Travancore Royal Family . The town became famous due to Kathakali also as it was here only it was discovered as Ramanattam in the 17th century by Prince Kottarakkara Tampuran and later patronized by the Raja of Kottarakkara in early 19th century absorbing other dance forms of Krishnattam with further innovations.

Kottarakkara is also famous for the temples and ancient churches like Ganapathi Temple and Mar Thomas Church which were built in historic times. Kottarakkara Sree Manikanteswara Mahadeva Temple is located near the “Althara”, on the northern side which is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of a fierce hunter .Kottarakkara is known as a land of temples. The Padinjattinkkara Mahadeva temple,Manikandeswara temple,Kulasekharanalloor Sreekrishna temple,Thrikkannamangal Mahavishnu temple, Neduvathur bhagavathy temple are all famous temples.
