Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple

Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple also called as Chettikulangara Devi Temple is one of the famous temples dedicated to Goddess Baghvathy located at Chettikulangara in Alappuzha District of Kerala India. Here the Deity is worshiped in three different forms at different intervals.Maha Saraswathi in the morning, as Maha Lakshmi at noon and Sri Durga in the evening. This is the second largest temple in terms of income under the control of Travancore Devaswom Board, second only next to Sabarimala.

Kumbhabharani festival celebrated in the month of Kumbham i.e march or April is the major festival of this temple. Some of the other festivals celebrated in the temple are Parayeduppu , Ethirelpu Ulasvam, Aswathy Ulasvam. Kuthiyottam is performed as an important offering to the deity. This is a ritual dance practiced and perfected through several centuries.

Though enough historical evidences and authentic study materials are not available to support, it is believed that this temple dates back to more than1200 years. This temple was consecrated by Padmapadacharyar (a leading disciple of Adi Shankara) on the Uthrittathi day of Makara month in A.D. 823.

Kumkumarchana, Raktha Puzhpanjali, Panthirunazhi, Bhagavathi Seva, various types of Payasams, Niramala and Vilakku, Chanthattam are the offering offered by the devotees here. Being one of the most popular temples in Kerala attracts thousands of pilgrimage towrads it. Many other gods are also enshrined adjacent to the temple.

How To Reach Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple

Chettikulangara Devi Temple is about 8kms away from NH 47 at Kayamkulam in the Kayamkulam – Mavelikara route.

By AirCochin International Airport is located about 120 Km from here and Trivandrum Airport is also about 120 Km from here.

By Train– Mavelikara Railway station is located about 5 km from here.

By Road– Mavelikara is well connected via roads to other town and cities of Alappuzha . Private and KSRTC buses ply every minute in the Mavelikara – Kayamkulam route upto late night.
