Thiyattu Dance

Thiyattu is one of the oldest temple art forms, maybe 1500 to 2000 years old which is practised by a particular caste . It is a devotional offering to godess Bhadrakali and Sree Ayyappa . This ritual art is performed in a specially decorated pandal, before tha kalam a color design on the floor. Its a comnbination of song , drama and painting. The dance generally starts at dusk and remains from six to eight hours .

The artist sing and dance to the rythmic music of the chenda ,elathalam and chengila. The costumes bear resemblances to that of Ottamthullal and Kathakali. The ditinctive features are huge jingling anklets and face make-up with tiny toys.
