Chavara Bhavan located about 6 km from Alappuzha is the ancestral home of Kuriakose Elias Chavara . He was the co-founder and first Prior General of the first congregation for men in the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, now known as the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate, and of a similar one for women, the Sisters of the Mother of Carmel.
Chavra Bhavan is now a holy shrine and also a resort which attracts lots of tourist and devotees from all over Kerala. An antique beacon of light is also preserved here as it is .
