Kalady

Kalady is a tiny village situated on the banks of River Periyar and popular as the holy pilgrimage centre in the state of Kerala. Since it was the birthplace of Sri Adi Shankaracharya – one of the incarnations of Lord Shree Krishna, devotees flock this village all through the year. Sri Adi Shankaracharya played a major role in saving the Hindu religion from the ritualistic and superstitious state to which it has degenerated.

Shringeri Mutt located on the northern bank of Periyar river is a must see place among Hindu pilgrims and trust is run by Sringeri Mutt. Ramakrishna Advaita Ashram is also located nearby running a school, a charitable dispensary and a library. Other popular shrines are Sri Krishna Temple, Mattoor Thiru Vellaman Shiva Temple and Aryadevi Samadhi Mandapam. The river Periyar has taken an uncharacteristic turn towards the Sringeri Mutt, believed to be the site of Shankaracharya. The temple complex has shrines dedicated to Dakshinamurti and Goddess Sharda.

Shankaracharya Jayanti is celebrated in the months of April or May every year and it continues for 5 days. Navratri is also celebrated year after year in the months of September or October with a large pomp and show.

Kalady Weather and Best Time To Visit

Kalady has a diverse climate and the best season to visit is from August to March. Summers are typically warmer and it will be a much better option not to go this time. Monsoon season may increase a little bit problems in the months of June and July for tourists.
