Places To See in Kannur

Kannur is a beautiful city located on the malabar coast of the Northern Kerala. Kannur boast of its rich historical past that goes way back to centuries. There are various tourist places in the city. Various historical sites and monuments are worth visiting that depicts the art and culture of Kerala. Some of the famous places are-

St. Angelo’s Fort– Dom Francisco de Almeida built the fort in 1505 . The fort is under under the Archaeological Survey of India.St. Angelo’s Fort is about 3 km from the city Kannur. Tourists are allowed entry to the fort every day of the week between 8 AM to 6 PM.

Arackal Kottaram– It was the palace only Muslim royal family of Kerala Arackal Ali Rajas. Much part of the palce has been put for display to tourists which depicts the grandeur of Kerala Islamic art and architecture. Some of the rare pieces of pre-colonial art can be viewed in the palace.

Valapattanam – Valapattanam is famous for largest wood-based industry in South East Asia . Valapattanam is a small village located about 7 km from Kannur. It is also famous for fishing harbor and timber trade.

Odathil Mosque-Odathil mosque is one of the ancient mosque located in Thalassery. The mosque is about 500 years old built by an Arab merchant in Kerala architectural style. As other mosques it has no domes and is not open for non-Muslims people.

Payyambalam Beach– The beach is located about 2 km from Kannur and is famous picnic spot. There is a sculpture of mother and child by renowned sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman which attracts lots of tourists to this place. Its offers a scenic view of Arabian sea which allures local residents to it.

Meenkunnu Beach– Meenkunnu Beach a peaceful beach with a vast stretch of golden sand is located about 12 km from the Kannur city located in Azhikode village. The peaceful beach is a beautiful relaxing place surrouded by cocnut trees.

Moppila Bay– Moppila bay is located near St. Angelo’s Fort . The ancient Kadalayi Fort and Sree Krishna Temple remains can be seen near the place. It is a natural harbor situated in Ayikkara town of Kannur. It was the commercial harbor in previous times.

Peralassery Sree Subrahmanya Temple – Peralassery Sree Subrahmanya Temple is a famous temple located about 15 km from Kanuur. The temple is dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya, son of Lord Siva. The temple also has a shrine for the serpent God and has a number of bronze and copper idols of snakes.
