Kovalam in Kerala is one of the hottest tourist destinations of the country. The Kovalam Beach lies very close to Thiruvananthapuram with a distance of only 16 Kilometers. The much publicized beach of today was once a tranquil village along the coastline. The Kovalam History tells us the story of transformation of the serene hamlet into a vibrant tourism site.The Maharajah of Travancore will always hold a significant part in Kovalam History. Impressed by the beauty of the place, the King used to spend his leisure time there. His European guests soon came to know about the spot from him and by the third decade of twentieth century, it was made popular by the European visitors.

Kovalam shot into prominence during the 1970s when the Hippies arrived in Kovalam. Enchanted by its beauty and relatively peaceful ambiance the Hippy community came in hordes and in the process made it even more popular.Tourism in Kerala has reached its pinnacle of glory in the recent years and Kovalam is an integral part of the success story. The media attention on Kovalam has attracted a national and international travel house that arranges regular packaged tours bringing in tourists from all parts of the world . Kovalam was brought to the public eye by the Maharaja of Travancore. Over the past three decades, the place has been well developed, and now figures prominently on the world tourism map. Kovalam is just 16 kms away from Trivandrum.Today Kovalam beach is known as the “Paradise of the South”.

Discover a Cave temple in KovalamUnravel the Mysteries of the rock cut cave temple that dates as far back as the 8th Century . It is Situated a few yards from the Vizhinjam Harbour , The temple opens out to an underground Cave , which at present is completely blocked. An incomplete bas-relief appears on the granite boulder on either side of the opening and an idols of Sastha sits at the entrance of the Cave . Nearby is another Ancient Temple with idols of seven deities , Located on an Elevated ground overlooking the sea , Accessed through a Narrow Path .
