St. Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church

St. Mary’s Orthodox Church also called as Niranam Valiya Pally is located in Niranam village of Pathanamittha. The church comes under under the Niranam diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Niranam Church has a rich history of being the symbol of Christian faith in Kerala and a citadel of Orthodox Christianity since its inception in AD 54 by St Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. St Thomas reached Kerala in AD 52 and started preaching the gospel.

The church was the one of the fourth church that was built by St Thomas and was constructed in 1912. Since then the church is been reconstructed and was renovated in 2000. There is tall granite cross at the entrance of the church whose base resembles the carvings of Hindu Temples.

Church celebrated feast of various Apostles of Lord Jesus. Feast of Assumption of Saint Mary, Feast of Martyrdom of Saint Thomas, Feast of Martyrdom of Saint Behnam, Feasts of Mar Thoma II and Mar Thoma V. There are 5 altars at Niranam church.

By Train-Thiruvalla railway station is is located about 30 km from the city and Chengannur railway station is 26 km away.

By Road– Frequent buses are available from cities like Kottayam, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Coimbatore, Mangalore & Madurai.
