Places to See in Kumarakom

Kumarakom is a land of Backwaters located amidst Vemband lake. The name Kumarakom was derived from the deity of its oldest temple Kumaran. The city is blesses with lush green natural beauty and is a hot spoy for tourists in Kerala. Kumarakom has been declared a Special Tourism Zone by the Kerala state Government. Nearby city Kottayam located about 13 km from Kumarakom is also a famous tourist spot of Kerala thus making Kumarakom a famous tourist spot. Kumarakom is generally famous for Backwaters and Bird Sanctuary. Some of thye famous tourist places in the town are-

Vemband lake– The lake is an enchanting picnic spot and famous for backwaters. Spread along the lush green mangrove forests and paddy fields it is a remarkable place to spend vacation. Several luxury and budget resorts lined up on the shores of the lake provide tourists with facilities for boating, yachting and fishing, with panoramic views of the lake.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary– It is located on the bank of Vemband Lake in Kottayam District of Kerala. Kerala Backwaters the bird sanctuary is an ornithologist’s paradise and a favorite haunt of migratory birds. The Bird Sanctuary is spread over 14 acres of Land is home for variety of migratory birds.The peak season to watch birds is between June and August.

Bay Island Driftwood Museum– The museum displays unique collection of superior quality driftwood sculptures of very high artistic value, prepared through a rare and innovative modern art form, Bay Island Driftwood Museum is located at the scenic village of Kumarakom.

Pathiramanal– It is an island spread over 10 acres land in the border of Alappuzha and Kottayam. Its a favourite place for bird watcher as thousand of migratory birds can be seen here. The island lies between Thaneermukkom and Kumarakom, and is accessible only by boat.
