Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary

Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary is the second oldest sanctuary in Kerala. It is located at a distance of 23 kilometers from Thrissur District in Kerala.Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the year of 1958. There are a rich variety of flora and fauna found in this sanctuary.The sanctuary is situated in the basin of the Peechi and Vazhni dams of Trichur. It is spread over an area of 125 sq km .The average annual rainfall is about 3000 mm.There is a hill near the sanctuary known as the Ponmudi peak, which goes up-to a height of 923 meters.

Main attraction of Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary is Peechi dam and variety of wildlife in-habitat in this Sanctuary.The most Superior time to visit the Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary in the month of October to March.Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary attracts wildlife lovers and nature observers from anywhere in the world to intoxicate themselves completely in tranquility and beauty of its dense forests.

The Sanctuary consisting of the dense, moist caducous and semi-evergreen forests is a haven for a variety of wildlife that consists of many rare species of animals, birds and plants as well.There are 60 varieties of plants found that including rosewood, teak-wood and orchids along with plants of medicinal value. Among the wildlife, anyone can see animals like leopards, sambar deer, wild dogs, barking deer, spotted deer, bison and elephants. There are 25 types of mammals, more than 60 types of birds and 10 types of snakes are found here.

Carnivorous animals like leopard, tiger, fox etc and herbivorous animals like elks, deers, barking deers etc are found here. The place is compatible for boating and trekking in the catchment area of the Peechi and Vazhani dams.The Vegetation of tropical evergreen and mixed deciduous forests dense, moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forests are found here.

This sanctuary is a dwelling place of many kinds of birds and various species of birds were found out here in the ornithology survey conducted recently. The headquarters of this wildlife sanctuary is at Peechi Vazchani Sanctuary. The information Centre for the tourists helps a lot to the first comers and also solve other queries. The famous Kerala Forest Research Centre situated here adds status to this sanctuary. Tourists can enjoy the boating facilities are set in the lake.

By Train: The Thrissur railway station is at a distance of 23 kilometers from the park

By Bus: This sanctuary is easily accessible direct buses from Thrissur to Peechi and it is well connected by a wide network of roads.

By Airport: The Cochin International airport is located at a distance of 98 kilometers from this sanctuary.
