Eco-tourism is nature based tourism that involves education and interpretation of natural environment and is managed to be ecologically sustainable. It utilizes natural resources without harvesting them and provides employment for the local people. It also provides environmental education opportunities to raise awareness and supports conservation efforts, especially at local level.

List of Eco Tourism Destinations in Kerala


Ponmudi hill station (elevation 1030 mt.) is located 50 kms away from Thiruvannanthapuram. Ponmudi mountains provide a cool and chill climate for tourists. Facilities for trekking nature walk etc.


Mankayam eco-tourism centre lies near Palode, 45 km away from Thiruvananthapuram. Mankayam is famous for waterfall. Facilities for trekking etc. are available.


Situated around 35 km away from Thiruvannanthapuram. Kottoor is noted for its Elephant Rehabilitation Centre. Facilities like trekking, Elephant Safari, nature photography etc, are arranged.


Konni is in Pathanamthitta District and lies just 8 km away from the District headquarters. Elephant training camp is the major attraction. Eco-tourism activities such as trekking, Camping, Safari etc are arranged.


Kuruva is a river island in Wayanad District formed by the confluence of river Kabani. Being a popular picnic spot it is situated 44 km away from the District headquarter. Facilities for bird watching, trekking, photography etc. are arranged for tourists.


Located 50 km away from Kozhikode. Thusharagiri is noted for its water fall. Other major attractions are trekking, hanging bridge, nature education facilities, bath in the stream etc.


Parambikulam is situated 120 km away from Palakkad. Kannimuara World’s tallest Teak tree is located here. Now Parambikulam is a Tiger Reserve. Parambikulam and Peruvarippallam Dams, trekking, boating, jungle camping etc. are the facilities arranged for tourists.


Chimmini eco-tourism centre is located in Thrissur District. It lies about 37 km away from Thrissur. Bamboo rafting, trekking, jungle camping etc. are the major attractions.

Silent Valley

The name ‘Silent Valley’ coincide with nature conservation in India. It lies 40 km away from Palakkad. Silent Valley is a gallery of undistrurbed tropical rain forests. Facilities for jungle camping, trekking, bird watching etc. are arranged.


Nedumkayam is located in Malappuram District, 15 km away from Nilambur. The oldest teak plantation in the World-Cannolly’s plot is situated here. Major attractions are Elephant Kraal, Dawnson Bridge, Karimpuzha river, Chaliyar river cruise etc.


Peruvannamuzhy is situated 60 km away from Kozhikode. It is famous for the crocodile rescue centre. Forest trekking, water fall, crocodile rescue centre etc. are the noted attractions.


Soochippara is famous for its waterfalls. It is situated in Wayanad District. Being multi tier in structure, this water fall area is surrounded by beautiful natural forests. The major attractions are Chembra peak. Lakkidi view point, Pookkode late etc.


Periyar eco-tourism centre is a major tourist spot. It lies 115 km. away from Kottayam. Frequent bus services are available. Tourist from all over the world visit Periyar. Periyar lake, boating, trekking bird watching and a lot of other activities are arranged here.


Both are popular picnic spots in Kerala and famous for waterfalls. Facilities for swimming, bathing, trekking etc. are arranged for tourists.


Thenmala is the first ecotourism destination in India. It is situated 60 km away from Kollam, the district headquarters and 75 km from Thiruvananthapuram. Rope way, suspension bridge, music fountain, butterfly park, mountain biking etc are other major attractions.


Eravikulam, a mountain destination, lies 10 km away from Munnar town. Famous for Neelakurinji plant, which flowers once in 12 years. It is also the abode of the rare Niligiri Tahr. Ecotourism facilities include Wildlife Safari, trekking, mountaineering, jungle camping etc.


Neyyar Ecotourism Centre is located 30 km away from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala. Lion Safari Park, Crocodile Park and Neyyar Dam are the major attractions. Facilities for Trekking, Boating, Bamboo rafting etc are available for tourist.
