Places to see in Kozhikode

Kozhikode also known as Calicut lures tourists all around year to its beautiful beaches, historic sites, scenic hills and busy bazars. There are dense forests and also spice gardens. Kozhikode is also famous for boat-building yard, timber industry and historic temples and churches. Some of the famous tourist attractions are-

Sweet Street (Mithai Theravu) -Sweet Street is one of the busiest place and shopping center of Kozhikode. There are various shops here with many authentic items are available here , spices and various other goods. The market has a feel of the time of the Portuguese traders.

Tali Temple – Tali temple is located at the center of the city and is one of the oldest and ancient temples of Kerala which was built in 14th century by Swamy Thirumulpad. Tali temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is quadrangle shaped made up of wood and laterite in ancient Kerala style.

Kadalundi – Kadalundi is the Bird sanctuary located about 19 km from Kozhikode in the estuary of the Kadalundi River and over 60 species of migratory birds flock here in large numbers. Its a peaceful and hot spot places for nature lovers and bird watchers. This place is also famous for fish, mussels & crabs.

Kappad Beach – Kappad Beach is a very famous beach of kozhikode as it was the place where legendary explorer Vasco De Gama landed. It is located about 16 km from the city. This place has a historical significance which attracts lots of tourist to this beach.

Pazhassiraja Museum – The museum is located about 5 km from Kozhikode city. The museum was named after Kottayam Royal Family. Ancient murals, antique bronzes and diamond cysts, temple miniatures and umbrella stones contained in the museum. There is an art museum also nearby it which contains the ancient paintings by Raja Ravi Varma and Raja Raja Varma.

Mananchira Square – Mananchira Square is a park located a the center of the city . It name was derived from the man made lake Mananchira around which this place was built, th lake is fed by a natural spring. The park consist of the reminiscent of the intricate craftsmanship of time of Zamorin Kings period.

Krishna Menon Museum – The museum is located abouy 5 km from the Kozhikode city. It contains the collection of paintings by Raja Raja Varma and Raja Ravi Varma. It is is located adjacent to the Pazhassi Raja Museum. The museum is named after V.K Krishna Menon who was India’s defense minister during the period of 1957 to 1962

Beypore – It is a village located about 10km from the city. Beypore port has a historical significance where trading between Asia and the Middle East started. The village is famous for wooden shipbuilding.

Kozhikode Beach – Kozhikode is famous for its remarkable sunset view. The beach located along the malabar coast and is tourist famous places to relax. The golden sandy beach have lighthouse, a marine aquarium & a lions park.
