Silent Valley National Park located in Nilgiri Hills bio-reserve is a Natural Paradise on the land of Kerala.The valley has an elevation ranges from 900 M to 2,300 above the sea level and offers breathtaking view of nature at its best. Silent Valley National Park is situated in the northeastern corner of Palakkad District. The whole Park area is a roughly rectangular tableland closed on all sides. Being the part of Niligiri hills this valley is hugely attracted by tourist, nature lovers , and adventurers. With its rich diversity of flora and fauna the place is place none other in the world , truly remarkable. A perennial river named Kunthipuzha is passing through the western side of the park, from north to south in direction finally merging in to Bharathapuzha.
The flora of the valley include about a 1000 species of flowering plants, 107 species of orchids, 100 ferns and fern allies, 200 liverworts, 75 lichens and about 200 algae.National Park is rich in faunal diversity and harbours 34 species of mammals, 292 species of birds, 31 species of reptiles, 22 species of amphibians, 13 species of fishes, 500 species of butterflies and moths.The most famous resident of the Park is Lion Tailed Macaque whose name has become almost synonymous with that of the Valley. A shy dweller of the canopy, this primate can be seen singly or in groups.
Climatic Condition
December to January have tropical climate with little bit of winters.The National Park receives both southwest and northeast monsoons. Heaviest rainfall is during June , July and August. There is considerable variation in the intensity of rainfall across the area. There is also increase in precipitation as one goes from foothills to the high ranges. Silent Valley is closed on all sides with high and continuous ridges and steep escarpments, as a result the valley is shielded from the extremes of climate. Average minimum temperature varies from 8º to 14ºC. and average maximum temperature varies from 23ºto 29ºC .
How to reach Silent Valley
By Train– Palakkad Junction is the nearest railway station which is nearly 60 Kms away from the base camp of the National Park, Mukkali and Coimbatore Junction in Tamil Nadu is also 45 km away from Mukkali.
By Road– The nearest town is Mannarkkad, which is 19 km from Mukkali.
By Airways– Nearest Air Ports are Cochin International Airport at 135 Km, Coimbatore International Airport 55 Km and Calicut International Airport about 80 Km.
