Places to See in Varkala

Varkala is one of the famous tourist destination of Kerala . It is famous for its beach Varkala Beach . Located at the coast of Arabian Sea and surrounded by cliffs this place tourist a fascinating destination. There are many famous temples also located in Varkala. Some of the famous tourist places of Varkala are-

Varkala Beach– Varkala Beach is also known as Papanasam beach is an ideal place for swimming. It offers captivating sunset view. The beach has a stretch of about 1 km and there are many shops and restaurant nearby it. There is a fresh water spring also near the beach at the cliff near it. It is believed that dip in this water washes away all the sins. Mineral water springs on the beach.

Kappil Lake– Kappil lake is in between dense coconut groves at about 5 km from Varkala . The merging of this lake with Arabian sea is a beautiful view. One can enjoy the picturesque view while boating in the lake.

Anjengo Fort– Anjengo Fort is located in a beautiful natural place located about few km from the city. The fort was built between 17th to 18th century. The fort has a great historic importance as it was the fort captured by Portuguese, Dutch and Britishers. The fort is now under National Heritage Monuments. The beautiful Muthalapuzhi lake is situated in Anjengo.

Varkala Tunnel– Varkala beach is a famous tourist place 924 ft long tunnel built in 1867 by T.Mahadeva Rao. The tunnel took 14 years to built.

Janardana Swami Temple– Janardana Swami Temple is one of the famous tourist attraction in Varkala . The temple is believed to be 2000 years old located close to Varkala Beach. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. A large bell washed up from the wreck of a Dutch merchant vessel is kept on display at the temple.

Sivagiri Mutt– Sivagiri Mutt is a famous ashram in Varkala built and founded by Sree Narayana Guru.The tomb of Sree Narayana Guru is located here. The asharam was built around 1908. The Asharam is located at the Sivagiri hills.

Sarkara Devi Temple– Sarkara Devi Temple is one of the famous temples of South India. The famous Kaliyoot festival is celebrated here for what it is known for. The temple is located near Varkala at Chirayinkeezhu.

Kaduvayil Juma Masjid– Kaduvayil Juma Masjid also known as Kaduvayil Palli is located between Kallambalam and Attingal is a famous pilgrimage center of Muslims. Devotees both Muslims and Hindu are come here for prayers.

Edava Beach-Edava Beach is a wonderful lonely beach located at about 7 kms from Varkala.

Tiruvambadi Beach – Tiruvambadi Beach with a stretch of black sand is a peaceful beach located near Thiruvamdabi road Varkala.
