Kumily Places to See

Kumily is a small town locted in Cardmon hills near Thekkady in Kerala State of India. It is a major tourist destination and a spices trading center. With Periyar National Park and Thekkady nearby it attracts huge tourist traffic to it. It is located around the lush green plantation that offers beautiful scenic view. Some of the famous tourist places in Kumily are-

Vandiperiyar: Vandiperiyar, about 13 km away from Kumily, is one of the major trading centers of tea, coffee and pepper plantations. The Periyar River flows through the town and is the main source of water for the various plantations. The Government Agriculture Farm and Flower Garden are the major attractions of the region. The town is also close to the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, declared as a tiger reserve in 1978, is situated in Thekkady on the Western Ghats. This sanctuary is spread over 777 sq km and is regarded as one of the 27 tiger reserves in India.
Apart from tigers, the reserve is home to a variety of animals like wild elephants, common langur, Nilgiri langur, bison, leopards, lion-tailed macaque, gaur, sambar and giant squirrel.

Murikkady, situated near the Periyar Tiger Reserve, is a well-known picnic spot. This spot is popular for pepper, coffee and cardamom plantations. This picnic spot is located around 4 km from Kumily.

Mangala Devi temple is at a height of around 1,337 m above sea level. This ancient temple is devoted to Goddess Mangala. Special prayers are offered to the Goddess at this temple during the Chitra Purnima.This temple was constructed in the traditional Pandian style of architecture. The temple can be visited by taking prior permission from the Wildlife Warden in Thekkady.

Abraham’s Spice Garden is located on the route to Thekkady. It is an organic garden of spices which is situated off the main road. This garden is an ideal place for learning about organic farming, ayurveda and cultivation of different kinds of spices.

Anakkara It is located in Kumily Munnar road about 13 km from Kumily . It is surrounded with lush green plantations and is an upcoming spice tourism destination in the state.
