Napier Museum

Napier Museum is one of the ancient and oldest museums of India. The Napier Museum was developed in the year 1855 and Designed by Robert Chisholm. The Napier Museum is also called the Government Art Museum.The architectural master piece of the museum was completed in the year 1880.It was named after Lord Napier who was the Governor of Madras from 1866 – 1872.The museum houses a rare collection of archaeological , historic artifacts, bronze idols, ancient ornaments, a temple chariot and ivory carvings.It is a type of an Art and natural History Museum located in Trivandrum in State of kerala , India.The museum grounds has the Zoological garden which was established in the year 1857 & spread over an area of about 55 acres. The zoo has different varieties of species – the Lion tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Nilgiri Tahr, One Horned Great Indian Rhino, Asiatic Lion, Royal Bengal Tiger, Giraffe, Hippo, Zebra, Cape Buffalo etc.

Visiting hours: Wednesdays: 1 pm- 5 pm, Other Days: 9 am -5 pm (Monday closed)
Other Holidays: 26th January, 15th August, Thiruvonam and Mahanavami.

The Museum building is a combination of the Kerala, Mughal, Chinese and Italian architectural styles.The use of plastic is banned in the museum premises.The Napier Museum showcases Kerala chariots and ivory carvings. It also houses an array of priceless aesthetic and ethnic antiques.The museum displays an idol of Vishnu from the 8th century which has been garnered from the Ambalapuzha temple and is the oldest known metal image of Kerala. The sculpture called Shiva with Sati is a major attraction.t is furnished with an array of priceless aesthetic and ethnic antiques such as stone sculptures, wood and ivory carvings, lamps, fabrics, Kathakali miniatures, handicrafts, Kuftgiri items, musical instruments and a collection of the Chera, Chola, Pandya coins.
