Places to Visit in Cherai
- Lake (Poyil):At thisserene lake, situated close to the main beach, you can watch local fishermen cast their nets as you a pedal your boat across the lake and feel your worries melt away.
- Portuguese Fort: Built in1503 by the Portuguese and known as ‘AyaKotta’, this is the oldest European monument in India.
- Pallipuram Church: The Pallipuram Church also known as ‘Our Lady of Snow’ or ‘Manjumatha’ is an important pilgrim centre for Christians and was built by the Portuguese in 1577. The exquisite picture of Ave Mary on the top of its altar was brought from Portugal.
- Break-water Point:Situated at the northern end of Cherai beach, Break-water Point is where the river Periyar flows into the Arabian Sea. Sit back, enjoy the view and the sunset and watch local fishermen in their traditional canoes and colourful boats go about their daily chores.
- Chinese Fishing Nets:The Chinese Fishing Nets, used by local fishermen, are distinctly unique to Cochin and are found only here, outside China! A whole stretch of the coast along Fort Kochi and Vypeen are dotted with these nets. These make wonderful photograph opportunities and you can also learn how they work.
