Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is located in the Ernakulam district in state of Kerala.It cover an area about 0.0274 square kilometers.It has been declared as a protected area on 31st August 2004. There are large variety of migratory birds and supports many types of mangroves are seen within Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary.The Managalavanam is often considered as the “green lung of Kochi” which is otherwise polluted by its various industries and vehicles. Mangalavanam is primarily a bird sanctuary or resort provide a shelter from danger or hardship.
The Superior time to visit the Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary in between the month of Mid-January to Early-March.Mangalavanam is a popular bird sanctuary frequented by tourists, bird lovers, ornithologists as well as locals people. There are total of six species of mammals, Two species of amphibians and seven species of fishes are habitat here.In the year 2006, According to the Birds Survey founded that there are 194 birds belonging to 32 species, 17 species of butterflies, 51 species of spiders belonging to 40 genera and 16 families are reported here.The area is declared as Protected Area consist of a small pond with its edges covered with mangrove vegetation and the surrounding area with other trees species that can grow costal region.
The Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary are administrated and controlled by the Assistant Conservator of Forest and Wildlife Warden Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary of Nature Study Center Kalady.
